When he was a small baby, around a year old, he and his family was attacked by Lord Voldemort. The reason for this is that someone overheard a prophetic remark that a baby born around the same time as Harry was going to be the ending of the reign of Voldemort.
So, this evil man visited the Potter home, killed the father and went after the baby. The mother was not to be harmed in the process, but she stood between Voldemort and the baby. The love that she had for the baby was like a shield that saved him. The only thing that shows there was a battle was the small scar that was left on Harry's forehead from the attack.
It does not go away because it is a scar. In the magic world, injuries are harder to heal because they are created not by accident or by man, but by magic. This scar, because it was the result of a terrible curse, a killing curse, it was the worst kind of magic and so left a very obvious scar.
The scar is more significant but if I told you that, I'd be giving away the entire plot of the seven books. And I won't be doing that today, you'll have to read "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" to get that answer. Giving away the end of a book spoils it for those who want to read it. Sorry about that!
The scar does have significance, however. I can tell you that it created a link or bond between Harry and Voldemort.

M$If we see the significance of the scar from the perspective of its shape, we know that Rowling has described it in terms if lightening shaped. Of we ponder upon its mystery, we can see that the Greek God Zeus used thunderbolts as his weapon to show his wrath. Harry’s scar is similar to thunderbolt in its shape and signifies that Harry has been marked with something very powerful and dangerous. Just like lightening is fast and quick, so is death, but the fact that Harry managed to elude death, left its mark upon him. Through the novels we know that the Avada Kedavara curse does not leave its mark on the people it kills, Harry being the only exception.
Furthermore, we know that the shape of lightening also resembles a crack, so if we combine the knowledge of The Half Blood Prince and The Deathly Hallows, it would surely reinforce the fact that a piece of Voldemort’s soul was blown into harry through it, making him a Horcrux and thereby connecting them in magical ways by which Harry could sense Voldemort’s moods and intentions.

M$The infamous lightening shaped scar begins to burn every time Voldemort was near Harry. During the attack on his parents, Harry's mother’s love protected him from the Dark Lord. Now, Harry is becoming a powerful wizard like the Voldemort was as the infamous Tom M. Riddle, but Harry learns through Dumbledore that Voldemort put a piece of himself in Harry Potter when he survived his lethal attack as a baby.
The connection they have is important throughout the movies and the novels, plus there are several hints dropped about his physic connection to “he who should not be named”.
