The safest ones listed are sucralose, which is Splenda and neotame. Sugar alcohols such as sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol and maltitol are safe but consumed in large quantities may cause gas, bloating and diarrhea. Aspartame, found in Equal and Nutrasweet are probably safe, although some people have reported getting headaches with consumption of these sweetners.
Some of the artificial sweetners have been inadequately tested, so it's unknown as to their safety. These include Sweet One, Sunnett, Acesulfame Potassium (Ace-K) and
Truvia, Sweet Leaf and Honey Leaf. Saccharin which is found in Sweet N'Low is unsafe as it has caused cancer in rats and has been banned in Canada for over 30 years.
The key with any of the sweetners, even those deemed unsafe, is to use in moderation.

M$* Equal is aspartame. There are hundreds of different problems linked to aspartame. It gives me migraines. Additionally, there have been some reports that insulin responds to aspartame similarly to sugar (due to the sweet taste) and increases sugar cravings. Aspartame accounts for 75% of adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA and reactions can be as severe as seizure and death in some people.
* Sucralose (sold in Splenda) was created when designing an insecticide - it's intended purpose was to kill bugs. The claim that it's made from sugar is somewhat a work of fiction. It's made from a list of about 12 chemicals and then sugar is used to basically be eaten by these chemicals in the manufacturing process. Splenda also contains 96 calories and 32g of carbohydrate per cup. It's roughly 13% of the calories of sugar.
Chlorine is generally considered the most dangerous component of sucralose. Chlorine is a carcinogen and a poisonous gas, disinfectant, and insecticide. Symptoms from consuming sucralose include digestive upset (such as gas or diarrhea), skin irritations from allergic reactions, wheezing, coughing, runny nose, mood swings and depression. There have been NO long-term human OR animal studies done with sucralose.
* Acesulfame K - There have been no long-term studies of the product safety and tests that have been done in short-term studies were poorly designed. The product contains methylene chloride, which can cause headaches, confusion, depression, nausea, liver and kidney problems, and cancer.
* Saccharin which is found in Sweet N Low is probably the safest of the artificial sweeteners. There were animal studies in 1977 that indicated it caused cancer, but these results were not found in long-term human studies. There is limited evidence that it may contribute to bladder cancer. Anyone allergic to sulfa antibiotics will likely be allergic to saccharin. There have been reports that it may cause irritability and muscle dysfucntion (some idiots were putting it in infant formula).
* Stevia (found in Truvia) is the most recent entrant into the sweetener game in the US. It is not an artificial sweetener. It is from the stevia plant. One part of the stevia plant may increase the risk of cancer, but this is not well-researched and there is only limited evidence. Stevia can lower blood pressure and can even cause hypoglycemia in some people. These can cause headaches, dizziness, weakness, and fatigue. Long-term studies in rats also show that it may lower sperm count and testicular function in men and decrease birth weights of babies in women. These have not been confirmed people - only in rats.
