What is the russian version of the command "explorer.exe" in cmd? Or how can I change my windows keyboard layout through cmd?

I am currently trying to fix a computer for an international student who has a russian version of windows XP professional. I know I can remove it if I can access the explorer. Unfortunately, the computer will not boot explorer in regular or safe mode due to a virus. I can access the CMD window in safe mode, and I can access the "run" dialog box out of ctrl+alt+delete, but when I type, the characters appear in russian. I think it would accept "explorer.exe" if I could type in english, but I can't switch over. I've tried ctrl+shift and ctrl+alt to no avail.

I can also access cmd outside of the OS using a windows XP repair cd. If I can type in a command that changes the keyboard to English, that might let me access the operating system, so if there is a way to do that, that would help.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

First up, across all windows versions, the key files all have the same filenames. Exporer.exe will be the same in Russian; so you just have to get the keyboard typing in English.

1. You could try a bruteforce technique for the hotkey. It will be CTRL+ALT+something. Usually it is a CTRL+ALT+number. Just try going through everything on the number line of the keyboard, including ~ and whatever else is there. Usually that number is 1.

If there is a hotkey one of them should do it.

2. Safe mode should still give you access to the regional settings. You could temporarily switch the keyboard style to English and then hit explorer.exe via that.

I figured out Japanese windows by placing my English laptop next to my Japanese desktop. Everything is in pretty much the same position and all of the icons are the same.

English is the default language, and you can set the keyboard to type in English through the regional settings. Check out the link below, what you want to do is the opposite of what is going on there. You want to set the input language to English.

At any rate, what you see there might give you the hotkey, but if that isn't working you can try changing over the input method the hard way. Remember, all of the boxes are in the same place. When language makes you functionally illiterate, you just need to count your way through things until what you want to happen - happens.

I'll give it a try. You say that safe mode should give me access to the regional settings and then I can hit explorer.exe after I switch it to english. How can I access the regional settings before I launch explorer.exe. Don't I have to access regional settings through the control panel, which I have to access through explorer?

Edit: Just tried the alt + number keys up at the top, including ~. No luck.

A weird question. Can you post a photo of the keyboard?

I just checked out the bios. There's no options for language there. Here's the photo you requested.

Sorry, I misunderstood your initial problem.

I wonder - have you tried setting the language via the Bios? That might work.

Every computer should normally have the possibility to change the language to "English", it's default.

press alt + shift and your keyboard should now be qwerty (US)

Then try the command.

If it does not work, simply access this exact page and copy "explorer.exe" on his computer, then run it.

I can get to the command prompt in windows using "safe mode with command prompt" but everything I type in the command prompt is in Russian. I can also bypass windows and get to the "Windows Repair Console" by sticking in an XP disc. Everything I type there is in English, but I'm not inside of the operating system so I cannot start explorer.exe. If I can change the default language from there, that might work, but I can't find out how.

He can't get to this page because explorer isn't running.

I think the best way would be to boot to command prompt using F8 on reboot. Then try replacing exporer.exe from the windows dvd.

Then reboot and it should work.

Booting to command prompt and bypassing windows altogether should mean that the keyboard is English.

Wow, alt shift ended up working for me all of a sudden. Maybe I missed it before? I got into the OS, seems like the explorer file is messed up.

Now that you have an English keyboard, the next step would be to copy explorer.exe off the disk to replace the one that was there.

I had a similar virus a couple of years ago.
