What is the role of a mentor? How important is mentoring online?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

An effective mentor is invariably accomplished in their organisational role. They are generally admired and respected in their position, and their achievements in that position. Mentees will often look for a set of habits, approaches, style and skills that the mentor exhibits and that the mentee wishes to emulate and practice.

Good mentors have to be good listeners. They need to foster confidence in the mentee. Mentors who provide opportunities for their charges to articulate and develop ideas without fear of pre-judgement, criticism or ridicule, contribute real value to the relationship.

Mentoring someone online takes real time and commitment. The work required for online mentoring doesn't happen only at the most convenient time for the volunteer; the mentor has to schedule real time for mentoring to happen regularly, and for questions and comments by the person being mentored to be addressed promptly. A mentoring relationship can actually cause harm to the person to be mentored if the volunteer does not make the relationship a priority, and makes the person to be mentored feel forgotten or not of great importance.

role of a mentor is to bring your way of thinking on to correct lines that is required...........he must be able to make you think.........only telling you what to do is not good mentorship...he must be able to invoke that self thinking ability in you so that you are not dependent on anyone................yeah online mentoring does require great commitment on part of both the mentor and the student as talking face to face does make a whole lot of difference......
