What is the importance of studying microbiology in relation with the nursing course?

Although I am not a doctor or a nurse myself, my assumption would be that a nurse would benefit from a course on microbiology, considering nurses work around the sick and diseased on a daily basis. Microbiology would provide plenty of background on where diseases and viruses come from, that is knowledge that a nurse would greatly benefit from.
