What is the reason for earning points when answering questions.

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Welcome to Mahalo Answers BTW. Everything you need to know about points can be found within this link.

Points will help you earn higher belt levels, therefore increasing your credibility within the community and also opening up new features for you.

I can't give you an official answer, but here are some thoughts:

1. People are competitive. People seem to naturally fall in line when it comes to accumulating things like this; think of a Dave & Busters or Chuck E. Cheese (stay out of the ballpit), and how people cough up quarters to win tickets which are exchanged for things that are perhaps a 10th of the value of all of the quarters they used to earn them.

2. Points are an approximate way of showing how much activity you have on Mahalo Answers. This activity gets you higher belt ratings. Conceptually, the people with more points have more points because they are very active and give consistently good answers (even though this can be gamed).

3. Points are the default method for calculating Top Members. People want to be in the limelight on the front page!

Getting pretty colored belts... And the ability to ask/answer more questions and, therefore, earn more money.
