Thrust Vectoring Nozzles increase the flight capabilities of an airplane significantly. The turning radius of a jet with TVNs and its total maneuverability is literally not even comparable anymore to a jet with fixed-mounted engines. Which explains that this type of technology is not to be found on passenger planes (like the Sukhoi S100 in the picture above.) Thrust vectoring is used in fighter airplanes to give pilots really amazing capabilities during dogfights (watched the movie Top Gun with Tom Cruise?). Old planes like the F15 or F14 Tomcat have only the controlled air surfaces on their wings to make the planes turn. The F22 Raptor has TVN and ... well, watch the video clips (see links below.) To experience a little the difference between fixed and vectored thrust do this at home. Go outside and hold your garden hose with your right hand. Turn the water on (away from ;-). Now move your left open hand (insight of your hand parallel facing the water beam) slowly toward the water beam. Hold your right hand at a steady angle. When you touch the water with you left change the angle of your hand to deflect the water. Now while still keeping your right hand in the same position, change the angle of the hose. Do you feel the water pushing your hand down?
Now watch the video...after drying yourself off.
