What is the purpose of these points?

I mean, I'm getting them, but.... so what?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Points are used to go up in levels. They do not get you anything in real life. Levels or "belts" show how much time people have put into the site. When you go up in levels you can gain access to more features on the site. For example voting on if an answer is helpful.

Some people are driven by material things, like money; others, by recognition. Points are one way of recognizing someone someway. Even if they were meaningless for others, they could have a value for one person, like in Monopoly. Points are fun, at least to me. They also show some kind of authority when you answer questions, but that's a bit more refutable. You can get lots of points with nonsense (only up to a certain level).

The purpose is to keep Jason Calacanis awake at odd hours wondering how the hell he will come up with a solution to what these points might mean

At least initially, it appears that going up a belt or so allows you to mark answers for their helpfulness. Further into the beta, Mahalo may provide increased privileges.

Also, while this isn't exactly a benefit in itself, having enough points to be at a higher belt level allows you to have a higher cap for point gains from tips. You gotta have points to make points, I guess, although that really doesn't answer the question.

So in actuality, the point system is a hollow rewards system -- it's like winning a game of chess. But for some people, the fun is in how hard the game is -- not what you actually win. And no, I'm not trying to say that chess is easy :)

check out the site in my sources.. its the breakdown of how to get poinst... the higher level you have the more access you have to the site. For instance when you get to yellow belt, you can say if an answer was helpful or not and vote on answers.

As points go up, so does your your level, the number of questions you answer daily, and how many points you can acquire each day.
Short, simple and complete.
