What is the purpose of a library? Why are they there?

Please add at least one source to your explanation so that we can get further clarification on what you mean. Thanks!

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

We need libraries because all great advances are made on the shoulders of giants. Without access to the great thoughts of others, we can't move forward. We have to work our way through the simple groundwork, over and over. Libraries have historically brought great thoughts into one place, so that scholars could leap from those thoughts to the next height.

Objectives and Purposes of the Library

The Chelmsford Public Library System accepts, as its basic objective, the
provision of materials and services to the public, as outlined in the American
Library Association’s “Minimum Standards for Public Library Systems, 1965”:

To facilitate informal self-education of all people in the community.
To meet the informational needs of all by providing materials or
referral.

To enrich and further develop the subject areas in which individuals
are undertaking formal education.

To encourage the use of library materials and services for recreation.

To support the educational, civic, and cultural activities of groups and
organizations.

Libraries are a community service from municipalities. Not only do they provide free research materials to city residents, but fiction, non-fiction and magazines are available to be checked out by city residents. It's a benefit of living in the USA!

It's a public service to provide resources to a community when it is simply not feasible for every member to maintain copies of every useful, interesting, or entertaining piece of media.

Libraries have been around since the beginning of recorded history.

Libraries in essence are repositories of knowledge,i.e stores off the collective human knowledge from the moment man invented writing. So effectively there are there to safeguard this knowledge and aid in its transmission to present and future generations.
The second link below the one titled advocacy has a number of scholarly articles talking about libraries, check it out, i hope that was helpful.

Knowledge is power. A free, unfettered library makes that power available to anyone who wants it. That is what a library is for--what all libraries are for.

depends on the type-
http://www.csc.noaa.gov/cmfp/info/libraries2.htm

Special Libraries
Included in this category are libraries that are run by corporations, associations, or governments, or libraries that specialize in a particular subject
Public access tends to vary. In many cases patrons can use materials but not check them out
If you are unable to use the resources of a special library, ask about an interlibrary loan

public libraries
Large main branches are your best bet
Most have an extensive reference collection (dictionaries, encyclopedias, indexes, etc.)
Most also provide electronic resources such as Internet access and databases on CD-ROM

college library
Typically have more information sources than the average public library
Many are open to the public
Collection reflects the academic majors and specialties of the school

To Keep kids out of gangs by providing video games and sweet cd's.
Or some might say
The central purpose of libraries is to provide a service, access to information.

It's something the Government set up, and still exists.
Your taxes help pay for it, so use it.

But you ask a good question, Libraries as we know it may die with our Generation, with the coming of the Internet.

What you probably should know is that you’re insane, it is a temporary condition and is hard to tell apart from societal norms, but it is curable. Seek treatment immediately by figuring out who you are…there are clues out there if you look.
