What is the Public Option for healthcare?
What is the public option healthcare thing they're always talking about on the news? Is that the same thing as universal health care? Is it free like in Europe or is it something that you have to pay for?

The Public Option is an alternative to Universal healthcare that the government is trying to push in order to find a better way to finance the process. This would mean that there would still be insurance companies and businesses would still provide insurance as part of a benefits package but individuals would have the option of purchasing reduced cost insurance through the government. The theory behind this is that it would drive the cost of insurance down in order to compete with the public option and would cost less for the consumer overall no matter what they chose.
This would also reduce the cost to the government. The public option is in no way free like Europe and actually could cost some people more in that once it goes into effect, as a citizen you would be required to have insurance and could be fined for not keeping coverage.
