What is the proper way to take care of dog bite wounds?

My niece lives in California and her daughter recently got bit by a dog and has dog bite wounds. Unfortunately, I understand she should go to the doctor, but they are struggling and have no insurance. She assures me her daughter has had a tetanus shot, and she knows for a fact the dog is up to date on all of his shots. (The bite is from her neighbors dog.) What is the proper way to take care of dog bite wounds?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I know that this is too late, but I'll mention it for future reference. The first step after receiving a dog bite and deciding it isn't serious enough for the ER is to wash the affected area for 4 or 5 minutes with soap and water. This of course, assuming it isn't a deep wound. You'll want to remove as much of the dog's saliva from the area as possible.

Now this is what should be done to an already existing dog bite wound:

Use clean white gauze to place a bandage over the location. Which should be changed on a daily basis. As a precaution to avoid infection, put an antibiotic ointment on the location before placing the gauze on. The area should be looked over at least once a day to check for signs of an infection.

The signs for infection include:

* Redness in the location
* Swelling of the wound
* Heat, is the area hot to touch.
* Pus: Does the wound look white, yellow or green? Or has oozing in this color?

the real problem can be infection getting into the skin causing cellulitis, proper treatment would be a 5-7 day treatment of oral antibiotics if up to date on tetanus and dog has had all shots, watch for any increasing redness or swelling.

An estimated 15% to 20% of dog bite wounds become infected. Properly clean the wound and get to a medical facility centre to get help.
