What is the procedure for giving children fillings at the dentist when they are under the age of five?
I have been told that my oldest son needs to have a filling on one of his molars. My initial reaction was that because it was a baby tooth, I really didn't need to do it. After doing some research, I realize that he's going to have his molars for a long time so it does indeed need to be filled. :( So my question is what is the procedure for giving young children a filling? Is it the same as adults?

As you said, if the cavity is tiny and the tooth will fall out, then the dentist would probably simply leave the tooth alone and let it fall out on its own.
However, as you said, the molars do remain for a longer time, so it will need to be filled. Yes, the procedure is the same as it is for adults. However, if you use a pediatric dentist, the procedure will be much less scary. They will use flavored topical numbing cream and, if necessary, will be very gentle with the novacaine. If the cavity is very small, they may even do the procedure without any novacaine at all.
