What is the primary diff between Gnome and KDE? The easiest Linux distro for a Windows user to adapt to?

Tried Mandrake a few years ago but as a dual boot system. Had no problems with it but never used it much. Would like to set up an aging desktop that I am about to inherit with a Linux distro but don't know where to start these days, don't want to spend weeks researching all the differences out there, pick one, learn it's finer points and then try another. Any opionions etc. greatly appreciated.

Thanx

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The choice between gnome and kde is mostly a matter of personal preference. Personally, I prefer gnome as I don't like the kde taskbar. KDE is often said to be the easiest for a windows user to adapt to, but I feel that Linux mint with gnome would be the closest to windows.
For a older computer, Linux is definitely the right choice as it is both faster and more stable. In fact, the only weakness of Linux is the lack of good games and video editing programs, but I don't think you will be doing much of either on a older computer.

To sum up, I would recommend Linux Mint for you due to its slightly windows like look(except the menu which is MUCH better than window's start menu), stability, and community support(it is based on ubuntu, which has a very active community, so most things that work on ubuntu would work on it)

I am a Windows user forever and the only thing I hate worse than Microsoft, is Unix/Linux/OS10.

I have tried Red Hat, Mandrake, Suse, and Ubuntu.
I don't like any of them, but I like Ubuntu much better than the others because it is much easier to install and configure.

I play with it when I get bored but I am a business person and Investor and I find that there is almost nothing useful I can do with any of them.

Try linux mint. and of course, the usefulness of a product can not be judged by its ability in a specific usage, but as a general view. That said I believe there a quite a few good, open source programs for investors.

Logically, this sentence makes no sense. You hate Microsoft more than Linux, but use their biggest product...
