What is the point of Tipjoy? Is it just trying to re-invent Paypal, or is there more to it?
It seems Twitter has come up with a micro-payments system called Tipjoy.

Nice name, but do we really need another system? Isn't it just re-inventing Paypal?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I'm from Tipjoy :-D
Tipjoy is a separate company from Twitter.
We're trying to power micropayments across the web. We think that to work they need to be social and simple.
One way we facilitate that is to build on top of twitter, where the command link "p @ev $2" would initiate a payment. It's really simple, and quite social.
PayPal would charge ~65% overhead on a $0.50 payment. We'd charge only ~10%. That's a pretty big difference, and doubly so when you consider how many billions are spent on small items like songs.
Wouldn't it be cool if you could buy an album right on twitter, and share that info with your friends?

Thanks for the info, nice to see you taking the trouble to answer here.
So the main benefit is lower charges for small transactions?
From your a quick look at your site it looks like there is no way to actually withdraw money. It has to go to charity or gift cards?
I like the social aspect of it, especially when used for donations. It creates peer pressure for others to donate too.
