Its all about 3 friends named farhan , raju and rancho and a professor who thinks education is all about competition and merit (marks) ...
where as farhar and raju are from typical indian middle classes rancho is from a rich family . and rancho is like fundoo ( its like a person who reads less and get more marks in indian slang) all the revolves arounds 3 friends in one of the indian best schools .. as time passes farhan and raju find themselves getting low scores and struggling with their academies where as mischievous rancho topping the class every time. as they move on to final year where most of the future is gets decided in placements . Rancho realizes both his best friends are not up to the mark .so rancho starts motivating his friends to find their own destinies in their own way . in the end , raju gets selected in campus and joins some MNC . farhan rejecting campus placements to start his career in wild photography which hez actually in interested in rather engineering . and rancho just disappears ...
After 10 years suddenly Chatur ramalingam (college mate of these 3 who always gets 2nd rank one day challenges rancho that he'll be in top position after 10 years. Now hez in very good position settled abroad in finest MNCs married to a rich girl and possess a lamborghini .. came to india for one of the biggest deal with Pungshuk wangdoo , as he says once he gets that deal his life will be changed for ever leaving Racho far far behind in career pursuits ) calls both farhan and raju and tells he found the address of Rancho and wants to meet him with them . what ever the Chaturs idea was both the friends are thrilled to know that after a long time they are meeting racho ..
as they reach the address they come to know that rancho was not a rich guy as they use to think . rather a servant who did his education in the name of his master named rancho who uses that degree certificate to get government contracts . and racho (master) says the guy these people looking for them left before 10 years after handling certificates to his master . Now hez living in some secluded place in ladakh .
Thrilled by such answer Ramalingam decides to find racho (servent ) and other both follows him so that they can find their old friend
at the end of the movie these three people find Racho (servant) running some missionary kinda school in Ladakh ( considered to be one of the backwards areas in india ), as both raju and farhan feels happy to see him . Ramalingam asks Rancho (servant) to sign DECLARATION OF DEFEAT , though feeling little trivial rancho (servant) signs his defeat to ramalingam . then ramalingam takes away the racho's pen saying that pen deserves winners ( actually its some kinda rare pen which their professor gives to rancho after graduation accepting his faulty vision towards life, remarking life and education is not about competition or merit rather human relations and knowledge ) . As ramalingam sets his next destination to resolves his Companies deal he calls Phunshuk wangdo only to realise its none other than Rancho ( servant ) who posses maximum number of patents and his research considered to be finest in india also runs a school for poor children where he teaches .
Realising the fact ramalingam apologize wangdoo ( rancho the servant ) and returns the pen he took and pleases him to sign the deal to save his career .
apart from this there is a love story with professor;s daughter and wangdoo which i dun think remarkable other than few romantic scenes and dances .

Yep i agree with vision india - 2020 .. even our government concentrating on that .
problem is with indian middle class mind set which always thinks in terms of security and conventional path . and as far as entrepreneurship is concerned not many people in india are encouraged by government . if there is anything which indian government encouraged is selling amway products ...
and indian policies are also not favorable to budding innovators . not at all in manufacturing sector . though india saw few successful entreprenuers they are all from service sector
Rancho is like robinhood . who steals money from MNCs bby selling his patents and rights and using it to the benefit of unreached poor .
yep i wrote it myself as wikipedia's plot is little difficult to understand .
Why india loved this movie . all because off its timing . it came when every one is loosing their jobs coz some american bank went bankrupt . :P
so all these losers who are hopeful though , can forget their momentary failures by equating themselves with characters of this movie.
Yep indian parents are very crazy about engineers and doctors . Myself did engineering from a repute engineering college . my parents never forced me to do engineering . as both of brothers are doctors . they are forcing me to become bureaucrat . hahaha ... wotvever indian parents are mad about educational merit and highly paid servant jobs . they dont encourage entrepreneurship .
contrary to western people indian parents provide financial support even when their kids reach late twenties :)

I think the message of the movie is that academics is not about the information that comes from a text book. You need to follow your mind and interests and create.
India needs to create its own things. Rancho represents the spirit of innovation and freedom of thought.

India is in a crisis of talent not keeping up with demand. India's education system is not keeping up with the demand for talent and skilled engineers. Engineering schools are having trouble retaining faculty. Education must work with the business that are seeking skilled talent to develop the next generation of engineers.
More entrepreneurs are needed in India. If India is to sustain its 6-8% GDP, it will need to create products for sale. The government of India must agree too, systematic change. International businesses must be given free access to India markets. "A thinking India with its own products"
