What is the perfect music day schedule at SXSW?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

If you don't already have the Music Day pass, it costs $695 now.

I am assuming what you mean by not breaking the bank is not buying the $695 pass? OK, then.
I could not find anything listed online at ticketcity.com but maybe it was just down. If you can buy individual tickets there for music events here is what I would do - assuming the new SHOWCASE bands are cheaper than the established ones, there are 2 showcase bands listed on Wednesday pm in one venue: Janelle Monelle and the Avett Brothers. I have included links for each for every band to get further info on each on that page, or their website. The ones I heard sound good, all are different from each other and therefore not monotonous for continuous listening, the 2 showcase bands got good reviews in the press, the established bands sounded good and they
are all in one location so you save on taxis between one hour shows which could be a very tight or impossible feat.

That covers from 8 pm to 1 am.
As for the day program, it says you need a badge
to get into the exhibits on their website, I don't know if you can
get individual tickets for anything else in music. Surprising they
give no info on that.
If yes, then the exhibit area is worth a visit,
and the talks schedule is here - if you can
wander back and forth to the best it would be fun.
http://sxsw.com/music/talks/schedule
some people like parties also and don't know
if they would be easier to get into or harder

If by not breaking the bank, you are politely
saying that you got a lift to Austin for the
day and have no money at all,
or individual tickets are sold out or too much,
or they don't exist,
there are two more options
or maybe a combo:
"In conjunction with the Austin Parks and Recreation Department, SXSW returns to the George Washington Carver Museum & Cultural Center with a series of free SXSW Music, Film, and Interactive Festival events."
http://sxsw.com/music
Two days have free music: Gospel
http://sxsw.com/carver/
Friday gives you music from 6-11
Saturday gives you music from 1-5 and 7-10
maybe you can get individual tickets to other events
at other times EG. film tickets so your trip is the
cost of an overnight plus some films.
FYI here is the film schedule for Wednesday:

If you can't get individual tickets, or they
are sold out and it does not work to wait 15
minutes before at the boxoffice, etc. then
maybe someone in the lineup will have an extra
ticket to sell if there are extra tickets as
people do get sick, or have partied too much
the night before and hotel lobbies where
events take place may have bulletin boards,
or at registration or at the festival
sales office, or hotel desk at a festival
hotel may have extra tickets to sell or give
away. Also there are many schedules of parties
and events, you may not be able to get in
but someone there may have an extra ticket
for a concert or event.
Hope that helps.
