what is the percentage of women in North America who have had one or more "pregnancy losses"?

a pregnancy loss can be a stillborn, or any child that does not survive before of during or right after the nine month term
Tip for best answer: M$5.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, 6,000,000 pregnancies every year.

4,058,000 live births
1,995,840 pregnancy losses

That's roughly 2 million every year. So, approximately 33%, the numbers are staggering.

Here's the breakdown:

Statistics Quoted from the American Pregnancy Association website:

600,000 women experience pregnancy loss through miscarriage
1,200,000 women experience pregnancy loss through termination
64,000 women experience pregnancy loss through ectopic pregnancy
6,000 women experience pregnancy loss through molar pregnancies
26,000 women experience pregnancy loss through stillbirth

It's really impossible to say since not all miscarriages are reported. It is estimated that up to 80% of first pregnancies end in miscarriage, but there is no way to know how many women have been pregnant.

Firstly, pregnancy loss can happen in different ways. With a miscarriage, pregnancy ends suddenly before 20 weeks... usually because of genetic problems with the fetus. An ectopic pregnancy occurs outside the uterus and therefore the fetus cannot survive. In a molar pregnancy, a mass or growth forms inside the uterus at the beginning of a pregnancy; and more often than not, there is no fetus. Losing a pregnancy after 20 weeks is called stillbirth.

nationalshare.org says 900,000 pregnancy losses a year in the U.S. Sounds high but I'd say close to 30 percent.
