What is the origin of the universally understood alarm sound? (The one on the iPhone)

I believe that it is a Klaxon. The last two links give information about klaxons in general. The second link is a similar sound which the Police Interceptor website calls a 'Surface ship - General Alarm (Old style) - IC/BMG stack (Stromberg)'. I think that the reason it is so universally understood is that the alarm has been used repeatedly in movies.
I use that particular ring tone myself. I can say that people, above a certain age, that are unfamiliar with the fact that it is a ringtone will freak out at my office if it goes off. Of course the fact that I work near radiation sources doesn't help....
