What is the origin of the phrase "Going to Town On"?

Examples: I finish my burger very quickly and someone with me or nearby says "Man, he really went to town on that burger" or right now my dog is furiously devouring his dog food and I could say "He is really going to town on that"..meaning that the dog and I both ate quickly or put a lot of work into what it is we were doing at the time.

What is the origin of this phrase?
