Originally, wreaths were used as adornment in Greco-Roman worlds. It arose from the Greek myth involving Apollo, son of Zeus, god of life and light who fell in love with Daphne. When Apollo pursued Daphne, she fled and asked river god Peneus to help her and so Peneus turned her into a laurel tree. Since that day, Apollo wore a laurel wreath on his head and this wreath became associated with Apollo who was known to symbolize ‘victory’. There started Greek and Roman worlds to use laurel wreaths for crowning victors and from which we also base our modern crowns upon.

The Advent wreath also can be traced back in the folk practices of the pre-Christian Germanic people who gathered wreaths of evergreen and lighted fires of hope in a coming spring and renewed light during the cold dark December of Eastern Europe.

In Christian culture, esp. us Roman Catholics, we call it ‘advent wreath’. It symbolizes the ‘coming of the Savior Jesus Christ.’

Christmas wreaths date back to the Roman and Pagan times. During the winter months in many areas the only things that remained green were evergreens such a pine, holly and mistletoe.

To hang a circular shape on your door would symbolize eternity. And the green would symbolize that the rebirth of Spring is not too far away. Imagine winters without electricity. In those dark times, I'm sure it would be nice to see the reminders of Spring.

I also found a good link that fills in some more theories and details. Enjoy!

According to the site I found, the wreaths date back to the days of the Persians. The soldiers and royalty both wore wreaths on their heads as a sign of importance and success. The wreaths were called diadems. Worn as headbands, some of them were decked out with jewels. The Greeks, according to this site, started placing laurel wreaths on the athlete’s heads at the Olympics around 776 B.C.

While the actual transition from headwear to door decoration is unknown, the story goes that an athlete placed the wreath from his head on the front of the door to show it off. Wreaths have evolved from there. This site appears to be a good source for information on Christmas trivia, as it has many links to other Christmas subjects. http://www.worldofchristmas.net/christmas-wreath/history.html
