What is the origin of the American word "Soccer"?

It comes from the 1889 word "socca" (which turned into "socker" in 1891 and "soccer" in 1895). It was originally slang, from "soc" (a shortened version of "the Football Association") and the suffix "-er" ("one who does something"). It was originally university slang for someone on the "football" team (later, "soccer" team). "Rugger" was originally used for someone who was a rugby player, but to my knowledge that never caught on. (Brits, feel free to correct me on that last point.)

The word originated from England. It was an abbreviation of ''Football Association''. It is believed that Charles Wreford Brown, an Oxford student, coined the word soccer. The school boys loved the nick name and the word soccer became popular.
