Modern soccer was established in 1863 with the formation of the English Football Association after the Football and Rugby associations separated. It was this year that the Cambridge Rules were rewritten. The has been some evidence cited that dates a game similar to soccer back 2000 years in China in a military exercise manual. Other areas of the world played games similar to today's soccer in ancient Greece and Rome. But the game as we know it today started in England. By the 19th century these games of kicking a ball with the foot became popular in schools. The formal rules in 1863 included forbidding a player from touching the ball with their hands and disallowing tripping of an opponent. Those basic rules are still in effect in today's game.
