What is the number one ingredient in American diets?

I think most Americans include cheese with some of their favorite foods. Let’s face the facts cheese in any form is a staple in many diets of Americans.
It does not matter if it’s a cheeseburger or pizza with extra cheese. A baked potato with sour cream, bacon, and cheddar cheese is also a good one. Just today for lunch, I had some French fries with cheddar cheese and bacon bits, and it was tasty. Granted I do not eat cheese much personally, as it does go against the low salt, low fat diet I am on, but it sure tasted good.

North Americans typically eat more processed foods made with white, bleached wheat flour and white sugar. Sadly these foods are missing part of the most nutritious parts needed for a healthy diet. The fiber, vitamins, minerals , and phytochemicals normally found in whole foods are destroyed due to over processing. The highly refined nature of the modern Industrial Revolution has brought us processed foods and fast foods giving corn, wheat, potatoes, and refined sugar a major bloom in production and industry, but unfortunately it has pushed out many ancient grains and their much needed nutrition for all of us consuming them daily. The age old guideline of 5- 10 fruits and vegetables a day is one that people need to up take in their lives. Not only is it going to create a healthier lifestyle for the individual but it will create a more healthier generation to come. Health begins at home and we are what we eat.
Fact: Scientific research indicates that Americans are consuming too much sugar and sweeteners which increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and other health problems.

It may not be quite so obvious, but the answer may very well be corn. You may not be eating the corn directly or as the end product, but just about everything you eat or drink has corn in it. High fructose corn syrup, corn-fed beef, dextrose, cornstarch, chicken feed (which you eat indirectly), corn oil and all sorts of additives all use corn in some form. That doesn’t include things like tortillas, corn chips or cereals that use the corn itself as a main ingredient.

Take this example from renowned author, Michael Pollan:

Take a typical fast food meal. Corn is the sweetener in the soda. It's in the corn-fed beef Big Mac patty, and in the high-fructose syrup in the bun, and in the secret sauce. Slim Jims are full of corn syrup, dextrose, cornstarch, and a great many additives. The “four different fuels” in a Lunchables meal, are all essentially corn-based. The chicken nugget—including feed for the chicken, fillers, binders, coating, and dipping sauce—is all corn. The french fries are made from potatoes, but odds are they're fried in corn oil, the source of 50 percent of their calories. Even the salads at McDonald's are full of high-fructose corn syrup and thickeners made from corn.
