LSU, or Louisiana State University earned the nickname the Tigers in 1896. After completing a perfect 6-0 season the school decided to adopt the nickname for two basic reasons. The first was that was the year a lot of schools were adopting nicknames that evoked ferocious animals. Of course the other reason the school adopted the nickname goes all the way back to the Civil War.
There was a regiment out of New Orleans that had been called the Tiger Rifles. When that company was folded into another battalion. That battalion was then named the Tigers collectively. David French, who was the first president of the school had fought with members of this company and knew their history thus he adopted the nickname.
Another nickname that LSU is referred to is the “Bayoux Bengals” which is of course a play on the fact that they are the Tigers and play in Louisiana.
