According to the American Heart Association, this Stent Procedure is also known as Angioplasty.

Excerpts from their web site...

Stent Procedure

A stent is a wire metal mesh tube used to prop open an artery during angioplasty. The stent is collapsed to a small diameter and put over a balloon catheter. It's then moved into the area of the blockage. When the balloon is inflated, the stent expands, locks in place and forms a scaffold. This holds the artery open. The stent stays in the artery permanently, holds it open, improves blood flow to the heart muscle and relieves symptoms (usually chest pain). Within a few weeks of the time the stent was placed, the inside lining of the artery (the endothelium) grows over the metal surface of the stent.

Yagelski's answer is right on. I will add some info to part of your question: "through the leg". . .

Angioplasty is generally performed during an angiogram. The catheter is inserted in an incision in the femoral artery on the front of the body at the groin joint where the leg meets the lower abdomen. (While the femoral artery descends on down the leg, the incision is generally done at the groin.) The catheter is threaded upwards through the aorta, where dye is injected while the patient is under a fluoroscope (a real-time x-ray viewer). The dye is pushed along with the heart's own pumping force, and flows through the coronary arteries that surround the heart, providing it with its own nourishing source of oxygenated blood. Any blockages are generally obvious on the fluoroscope, and if a stent is called for, it can be installed via the same catheter immediately. Depending on the location and types of blockages present, a stent may not be an option, and bypass surgery may be called for instead.

When the catheter is removed, the incision left in the femoral artery can be a serious problem. Arteries are under positive pressure from the pumping action of the heart, and an unhealed cut in an artery can easily lead to generous loss of blood and death. Assistants will typically apply pressure to the location for 20 minutes to ensure good clotting action on the incision to prevent the formation of a hematoma (or worse).

The full procedure has two parts, cardiac catheterization and stent placement. The insertion of a tube into an artery is called catheterization, and when the tube is passed through to the heart it is called cardiac catheterization. Once the catheter is in place, the collapsed stent is passed through the catheter to one of the coronary arteries, where it is deployed to expand the walls of the artery.

Angioplasty is a generic term for any procedure used to dilate blood vessels and includes stenting as well as balloon dilation and the use of drill-like devices to cut through blood-vessel obstructions.
