Assuming you aren't talking about ''Pet Semetary'' - the creepy cat "Church" (who still gives me nightmares) - I'm thinking you may be asking about 1985's ''Cat's Eye.'' I haven't seen this movie in years, and I was quite surprised at the cast list which includes Drew Barrymore, James Woods and Robert Hays. The film itself is based on a trio of King's short stories.

There is also the movie sleepwalkers. It is a movie about creatures called sleepwalkers who are basically a kind of shape shifters. The movie sleepwalkers is full of cats because cats are the mortal enemies of the sleepwalkers. Basically they have a natural duty to protect humans from the sleepwalkers. So this could also be the movie you are talking about.
