Let's separate this into traditional/classical and contemporary/pop/rock.
Globally, traditional Indian music is synonymous with one name: Ravi Shankar. Since the late 60's, he has toured the world constantly, appeared on major TV shows and been an enormous influence on Western musicians, from The Beatles to Philip Glass. He's also the father of Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Norah Jones. Shankar playing mixes the two major sub-genres of Indian classical music: Hindustani and Carnatic.
Indian popular music has also spread worldwide. The music of Bollywood, "filmi" in Hindi, has been highly influential in Western music, although not directly well-known until more recently.
The best-known contemporary Indian song worldwide is most certainly Jai Ho, a song from the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. It won both the Oscar for Best Original Song and the Grammy for Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.
Indian rock bands have also been seeing some success outside of India. The metal band Rudra has gained popularity throughout southeast Asia, and rave reviews from around the globe. Thermal and a Quarter has toured the UK and the Middle East on their own, and opened on tours with Jethro Tull and Deep Purple. In 2006, Kryptos became the first Indian metal band to sign with an international label.
My personal favorite is a Malayali rock band named Avial. They're not well known outside of India, but they definitely should be (see the last video below).
