Tip for best answer: M$1.00

I'd argue for the Ides of March, when Caesar was murdered on the steps of the Senate by his good friends.

Before Caesar, Rome was a Republic. Maybe some parts and people were corrupt, and it was that corruption that lead his friends to have him elected Consul, and a crisis that lead to him being named Emperator--which didn't mean Emperor, but more like "emergency chairman". They left him no choice at one point but to cross the Rubicon with his soldiers in arms, which was symbolically a big no-no.

It was mostly jealousy and fear that caused his murder. Had he remained in office, it's interesting to think about how differently European history would have turned out. Would his nephew Augustus have become Emperor, or would he have been merely a Consul? Would that whole crazy branch of the family have taken over, poisoning mothers and brothers and burning Rome? If Rome's leadership had stayed true to their Republican roots, would the decadence and decay have happened that weakened Rome and left it open to predation? Would France and Germany and Britain have been overrun by groups of people who destroyed what Romans had built, and left death in their wake? Would the Dark Ages happened? How would the Christian Church have been different?

I really think this one event changed the course of history in ways we can't even imagine. We might all be speaking Latin today--or Mongolian.

March 1, 1872, the environmentalist movement begins with the establishment of Yellowstone National Park.
" On March 1, President Grant signed the bill into law, establishing the Yellowstone region as a public park and setting a major conservation precedent. The Nation had its first national park; an area of exceptional beauty was set aside for the enjoyment of generations to come, and a tradition of preserving similar areas was established. "

Deal of the century - Alaska sold for 7.2 million dollars!
The 586,412 square miles Alaska Purchase by the United States from the Russian Empire occurred in 1867 March 30, 18671 with the purchase price set at $7,200,000 (about 1.9¢ per acre).
While criticized by some at the time the financial value of the Alaska purchase turned out to be many times greater than what the United States had paid for it. The land turned out to be resource rich and also provided the US a great advantage in the Cold War.

The first thing that came to my mind was "beware the ides of March," the death of Julius Caesar-- in mid March 44 BC.

05 March 1946: Winston Churchill delivered his famous Iron Curtain speech. He declared that Stalin has lowered an 'iron curtain....from Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic', and warned that the USSR was aiming for 'the infinite expansion of its power and doctrines'. For many his speech symbolised the formal start of the Cold War.

March 8, 1917

The Russian Revolution occurred, bringing communism to power. It almost made WWI go the other way, created the Cold War and is still felt in the power of North Korea and Chinese communists.

If that doesn't get you, the hula hoop was also invented in March.
