The most popular cat is the domestic shorthair which, in cat terms, is basically a mutt. These are the cats you most often see at shelters and when you respond to ‘free kitten’ signs or ads. If you’re looking for a purebred cat, the most popular breeds are probably the Persian and the Manx. I work in a veterinary clinic and these are the two purebreds we see the most often. We do have a few Maine Coons that are regular clients as well.
The tabby cat is not a breed but a color pattern. The coat has swirls, spots and/or stripes and they have a distinctive ‘M’ mark on their foreheads. The tabby pattern can be seen on several different breeds but is very commonly seen amongst the domestic shorthairs (DSH).

Most tabby cats have great personalities and would be fine with children but, because it is only a color pattern, the breed really does matter!
