What is the most innovative crowd sourcing website?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

it's also one of the earliest and remains the most socially significant: kiva (www.kiva.org). i have yet to see anybody do something on this scale, though others are equally interesting (like myrichuncle.com for student loans and so on - but those are all 'me too' sites - kiva was the first and the real trail-blazer...)

Crowdsourcing is a neologism for the act of taking a task traditionally performed by an employee or contractor, and outsourcing it to an undefined, generally large group of people, in the form of an open call.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowdsourcing

I've got to say that the most innovative instance of crowd sourcing is spammers redirecting Capcha's to be completed by people trying to get access to free porn.

The application: Spammer creates a porn website that requires a captcha to be filled out to gain "free" access, the unsuspecting horn-ball fills it out to get his groove on, and BLAM! the spammer has got a captcha filled out they can use to falsely create accounts on other webistes.

Not that great, fun, or ethical, but very innovative!

I know this is going to seem like sucking up but I think Mahalo Answers has to be considered for this though I am not sure I can say it is the most innovative yet, since it is still so new and we don't know what will come of it.

The best Crowd Sourcing movement on the web is actually one that has been around for a long time and actually helped strength the belief that Crowd Sourcing was a viable option in the technology/internet world. This has to be Linux (love the operating system or hate it you can't deny that without it Open Source, and by default Crowd Sourcing, would not be what it is today).

I think one of the most innovative must be foldit (http://fold.it/portal/)

This 'game' involves the arranging of protein molecules into shapes following certain rules. It takes quite a while to 'fold' a protein and is very important in the study of chemistry. Thus far computers have only been able to do an adequate job. They optimize the folding to a point, but often they start going down the wrong path so they don't get as far as they could and tend to get stuck before its fully folded.

People can see a better way to fold a protein than a computer can and the creation of a 3-d game to do it is just brilliant in my mind. Its tackling a problem that really is not solvable by any other means and is ultimately very beneficial to science.
