What is the most important aspect of life as a human?

What is the driving force behind who we are and what we do, what I mean by that is, what drives us to exist and what is the most important factor?
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think that most important factor that drives us to exist is the future. What does the future hold, what will it look like, how will our kids be, how old will we be, etc..the list is practically endless.

I think that Happiness comes and goes and you can either die happy or die alone. I agree that happiness differs from person to person as well. Thank you for the best answer. :)

I think conscious thought drives us.

Try thinking about absolutely nothing for 10 seconds. Pretty hard right?

Our desire to mate is really subconscious, but just about every waking moment is full of thoughts and images of one type or another. This is also what distinguishes us from other species. All animals have the innate desire to mate, but how many think about the universe like we do?

Ironically, given Adrianeden's icon, I think Buddhism teaches that all this "conscious thought" stuff and "desire to exist" is, in fact, a big illusion that you're supposed to be trying to escape. To break the cycle. But that comes only from my own personal understanding, I could be stating that incorrectly.

As a matter of fact, there's argument that whole notion of "self" is also just a convenient structure for something else. There's a book called From Gaia to Selfish Genes (linked in sources) which looks at deliberately ranging arguments, from "We are just individual moving bits in the bigger organism of the planet" to the opposite, "A human is just a gene's way of making more genes."

I'm also a big fan of Kurt Vonnegut's work, a number of his novels address the concept of omniscient entities (normally space aliens) and the whole idea of self/free will.

For most people, our driving force is the yearning to help one another, to have to knowledge that we have done something that made a difference, however small or trivial, and the tranquility obtained from the above method.

That, or money
