Our desire to mate is really subconscious, but just about every waking moment is full of thoughts and images of one type or another. This is also what distinguishes us from other species. All animals have the innate desire to mate, but how many think about the universe like we do?

M$As a matter of fact, there's argument that whole notion of "self" is also just a convenient structure for something else. There's a book called From Gaia to Selfish Genes (linked in sources) which looks at deliberately ranging arguments, from "We are just individual moving bits in the bigger organism of the planet" to the opposite, "A human is just a gene's way of making more genes."
I'm also a big fan of Kurt Vonnegut's work, a number of his novels address the concept of omniscient entities (normally space aliens) and the whole idea of self/free will.
