What is the most famous guitar in the world? Did the owner have anything to do with its fame?

With all of the famous guitar players and artists that have been "legend" what would you say is the most famous, known, and seen guitar that has ever existed? Would it be the very first one that was made, or would the most famous guitar be the one that the most famous man once played? Does and artist palying a guitar make it more important or just more wanted? So in your opinion what is the most famous or well known guitar in history?

I'm not sure how many specific, individual guitars can claim to have their own section on a wikipedia page, but here is one

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rory_Gallagher#Gallagher.27s_Stratocaster

Influential blues-rock guitarist Rory Gallagher famously retained his beloved 1961 sunburst Stratocaster for the entire duration of his career.

Gallagher (who unfortunately died in 1995) has sold 30 milion albums worldwide, and the Strat served him well on dozens of tours that took in the UK, Europe, and the US, and collaborations with the likes of Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Muddy Waters and Jerry Lee Lewis.

And here she is.

(I'm not even sure what's going on here :)

Having lived in Gallagher's home city of Cork for many years, I have been lucky enough to see the guitar on a number of occasions. It is currently displayed in the city's main public library.

As we can see from the wikipedia link, it certainly saw a lot of tweaking / replacing / repair work over the years. The stories it could surely tell . . .

B.B. King's Lucille.

The guitar is almost as famous as B.B. King himself. The guitar was a Gibson ES-335.
For those not acquainted with Lucille's story I invite you to listen to B.B. King tell it in his own words. And if you have the time listen to him talk about his love of Lucille.

Elvis' 1969 Gibson Ebony Dove because of Elvis' amazing stage presence and performances. Unlike Led Zepplin and the Beatles, Elvis was a one man show. That is why people are more likely remember his guitar. The other bands had several guitars on stage. Also, the 1969 Gibson was used with Elvis' white suit which is iconic for Elvis. Thus, when someone thinks of Elvis they think of that suit and with that suit that sleek black guitar.

In terms of popularity Elvis had the greatest number of consecutive number one hits; only second to the Beatles in total number one hits; second most multi-Platinum records; most Platinum records that any other artist. He had awards from many countries, arguably the first international celebrated musician.

He had as many fans as any of the biggest bands, but he was a one man show. Probably some of the most dedicated fans due to the pilgrimages take to graceland every year. His black 1969 Gibson is the most famous guitar in the world.

The most famous guitar of all time is the Gibson guitar. This is the guitar of Jimi Hendrix, the best guitarist.

Perhaps the only guitar in MOMA is that of Andres Segovia, probably the greatest guitar player of any generation.

"Guitar, 1912
Manuel Ramirez (1864-1916), Workshop
Madrid, Spain
Wood; Total L. 96.5 cm (37 5/8 in.); L. of body 47.9 cm (18 7/8 in.); L. of string 68 cm (26 3/4 in.); L. of lower bouts 26.9 cm (10 9/16 in.); L. of middle bouts 18.9 cm (7 7/16 in.); L. of upper bouts 22.1 cm (8 3/4 in.)

Andrés Segovia launched his career playing this guitar; he concertized and recorded with it from 1912 to 1937 and played it at his United States debut in New York's Town Hall in 1929. The famous luthier Manuel Ramírez was employed at Spain's National Conservatory in Madrid when this guitar was assembled in his shop in 1912.

From the plugged holes in the peghead, it would appear that this instrument was originally made as an eleven-string guitar, a design popular in Andalusia during the last half of the nineteenth century. It was undoubtedly converted to its present six-string configuration prior to its acquisition of Segovia.

In addition to the label of Manuel Ramirez, a repair label was placed inside by Santos Hernàndez, who worked for Ramirez and is believed to have been involved in its construction. The two-piece back is made of Brazilian rosewood, the two-piece top is ol spruce."
