The modern ideal of female beauty is a very slender body that has a larger chest, a smaller waist and long legs. Modern fashionable clothing styles are designed to accentuate the smallest part of a woman’s body (commonly the area just under the bust) and make the legs look longer.

While there have been attempts to encourage fashion to favor women who have more curves (including the current push to include plus size models in advertising), the general trend has continued to favor an increasingly thinner woman.

In the early part of the last century, a curvier female shape with larger hips was considered beautiful. From the 1950’s onward, fashion has favored an increasingly thinner shape. In the late 60’s, Twiggy was the first size zero model. She was the first of many in the decades to follow.

The British Association of Model Agents (AMA) says that female models should be around 34-24-34 in (86-61-86 cm) and between 5 ft 7 in (1.70 m) and 6 ft 0 in (1.83 m) tall.4 The ideal measurements used to be 35.5-23.5-35.5 in (90-60-90 cm), which were the alleged measurements of Marilyn Monroe.
