The mechanism is the human sexual response combined with fluid from the urethra.

"The sexual responses of men and women have many similarities. Two basic physiological responses to sexual stimulation are vasocongestion and myotonia, and they occur in both women and men. Vasocongestion occurs when body tissues fill up with blood and swell in size. ... The other response, myotonia, is the increased muscle tension that happens during sexual arousal. This includes both flexing (which is voluntary) and contractions (which are involuntary). The most obvious examples of this are the muscle contractions that occur during both male and female orgasm, but myotonia also causes facial grimaces and twitches in the hands and feet....

"When a woman orgasms, the uterus and orgasmic platform contract in rhythmic waves of muscular movement."

Women who squirt "produce a small amount of clear fluid which has only trace amounts of uric acid; this indicates the fluid comes through the urethra, but does not come from the bladder. Chemically the fluid is very similar to the fluid from the male prostate."

"True" female ejaculate is thought to be produced mostly by the Skene's glands (paraurethral glands near the erectile tissue that is commonly referred to as the G-spot). The Skene's glands are homologous to the prostate and produce a lubricating fluid. According to Wikipedia, the debate over the existence of the female orgasm owes its existence to the large anatomical variability of the Skene's gland.

For some women, there is likely (minor) loss of control resulting in the escape of urine as well.

What you may see in certain types of videos, well, that's more than likely urine in copious quantities.

I don't think anyone really knows.

Squirting is the 2008 equivalent of the G-spot in the 70's. Does it exist?

I wish they'd get Cytheria into a clinic and do some tests. Maybe even with some IV dye and an MRI machine. Figure out where that comes from and what it is.

WOW. (edit, 10 minutes later:)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_ejaculation is full of talk about the "controversy" and a large dose of feminist political debate about the subject. give the wiki page a read. it's even got Plato and Aristotle quotes on the subject.
