When I studied Kung-fu with a chinese grandmaster, he gave everyone a piece of jade to wear, he said jade has the ability to hold and store chi which can be used at a later time for health concerns that involve depleted chi, as the jade takes on more chi the color changes from that spring green to a darker greenish brown, this is why in martial arts circles the darker brown jade is reveared as more powerful as it is a sign that it has a great store of chi energy, this is one of hte traditional uses for jade by emperors or warriors or practitioners of tai chi and chi gung, the idea is to cultivate and store chi while you are in your healthy younger years for later use when you are in old age, there are many systems of cultivating chi for longevity.

The Chinese word for jade is "Yii" meaning "one who rules;therefore, jade was worn only by the Emperor and his family. In Chinese culture, jade was believed to have special qualities that were a mixture of the spiritual and magical, and was therefore a link between the physical world and the spiritual world.
Found in mountains and also in riverbeds, jade was even believed to have once flowed from the mountains as a liquid, a liquid which would confer a long life on those who drank it.

According to american.edu, on the meaning of the Chinese Jade bracelet, it was posted that " when one looks at the meaning of the word in Chinese, then it is here that we can see the beginnings of just how important jade is to the Chinese culture. The word for jade in the Mandarin Chinese language is yu. "The character for jade resembles a capital I with a line across the middle: the top represents the heavens, the bottom the earth, and the center section, mankind" (Jade p.1). In Chinese, the word yu is used to call something precious,....."
