What is the meaning behind Gogol Bordello's song "Not a Crime"?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It looks to me like the song is about religion. It's Ukranian, which stems back to gypsy folklore. Gypsy's are often linked to Paganism, and when they sing "In the Old Time/ It was not a crime" they're singing about a time where the gypsy, and in the end, Paganism, way of life was not rediculed, but embraced. To me it looks like a song about freedom to be whomever you chose to be, religion, sexual orientation, race, creed, or whatever.
