What is the maximum capacity of 2.5 inch IDE Drives?

I need to upgrade my Laptop's hard drive and found a 250GB drive. Is there anything larger?
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There is no theoretical maximum but 250GB is the largest that I know of. The manufacturers are building their newer, bigger drives with the more modern serial ATA interface.
This one is $89 at Amazon:
Western Digital WD2500BEVE Scorpio 250GB Mobile Hard Drive - ATA-100, 5400, 8MB, OEM
source(s):
I was looking myself and bought the one that I mention.

IDE usually refers to parallel ATA drives nowadays, and the "ATA-6" standard introduced 48-bit addressing, increasing the theroetical limit to 144,000,000 Gigabytes.

The largest I'm seeing for sale are 250GB. Looks like most manufacturers have moved on to serial ATA.

If you read the fine print in that ad you will see that it is a desktop drive and only uses some energy saving features from their 2.5" line, it is not one.
