Marketing in business is not what most people think. Many people confuse promotion, which is one of the elements of marketing with marketing in general. Marketing is actually an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating and delivering a product or service to a customer. Marketing has been classically defined by “The Four P’s of Marketing”. They are product, price, promotion and place.

Management defines a product and marketing controls the specifications and development of that product or service. In some organizations this might be product engineering. Along with developing the product marketing controls the price, which includes the profit and cost allocation of a product or service.

Place refers to how the product will be distributed. How will it get to market and what are the costs and issues with getting it to a specific place. This can also include packaging specifications, transportation and how the distribution channel will be compensated for product or service delivery.

The final step in the process is the promotion, which includes the communication of the product to the outside world but also the sales function. This includes advertising, compensation and overall management of the sales channel.

Each business will have its own unique marketing process. The places you market at and the things you use to market need to be appropriate to your business and the potential and repeat customers you are trying to reach through your marketing. More and more businesses are now marketing online through Facebook and Twitter since millions of people visit those sites everyday. A steadily growing number of businesses, especially small businesses, also have blogs to inform, connect with, and market items and services to their customers.

The process of using those marketing avenues usually involves researching your potential customers to find out more about what they want and need, finding ways to craft or modify your offerings to meet those wants and needs and telling your customers all about your offerings in a consistent, non-pushy way.

The best tip I can offer you, in addition to those described above, is to be repetitive in your message. If you blog about a new product or service you have coming out, talk about it on Twitter and mention it on Facebook. Encourage your current or repeat customers to talk about it too. The more often people see a positive message, the more likely they will act on it.

It’s especially important to repeat calls to action. Whether you want your readers to buy a product, Stumble or Digg your posts, or subscribe to your blog, it pays to repeat yourself.

In the marketing concept, a company must look and discover way to fulfill the needs of its customers and bring to market these products to satisfy these needs. The process of doing it is called marketing process. The Marketing Process involves analysis of situation, marketing strategy, marketing mix decisions and implementation and control.
A careful analysis of the situation serves as the basis to be able to identify opportunities to satisfy the needs of customers as well as understand its capabilities and environment it is operating. Included in this are past, present, and future aspects.
Once analysis is done, marketing strategy is developed that involves segmentation, targeting, positioning the product within the target market, and value proposition to the target market.
Detailed strategies are then created for the controllable parameters of the marketing mix. These include product development, pricing, distribution of contracts, promotional campaign development..
And lastly is the implementation and control. Close monitoring after the launching of product to the changes of the market so that you will know when a product should be changed or improved.
