What is the largest number of digits of Pi that are known?

For most people that use Pi, they know it is approximately 3.14 or use 22/7 as an approximate fractional value. Many people have memorized Pi to hundreds and perhaps thousands of digits. Why would someone memorize this to so many digits? How many have you seen?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Pi is an irrational number, meaning that it can be formed by no fraction with integer numerator and denominator. This means that as a decimal it never ends and never repeats. To find any decimal digit of pi, different formulations have been used to calculate the continuous stream of numbers. Throughout history the calculation of these extra digits has been almost like a challenge than something of practical value, for example a physicist using pi accurate to only 39 digits could make a circle the size of the observable universe which would be accurate to the size of a hydrogen atom. This being said it does get used to test the accuracy of super computers.

The currently held record for the most computed digits is 2.7 trillion, although currently there is a claim that it has been calculated to 5 trillion digits, but this has yet to be verified. As far as memorising goes, there is currently a similar situation. The record is held by Lu Chao from China who memorised 67,890 digits, although there is currently a record being verified by Akira Haraguchi from Japan who memorised 100,000 digits of pi. People memorise these more as an exercise, to memorise something that is very difficult. The Cadaeic Cadenza is a piem (pi poem) in which each word represents a digit of pi with its number of letters. It represents the first 3835 digits of pi this way.
