What is the importance of music in rehabilitation?

I recently watched the PBS documentary "The Music Instinct" and out of many topics one about music in therapy really stuck out.

Listening to drum loops while learning to re walk after a stroke or other accident have proved to be highly successful. Patients and doctors believe the steady tempo and mechanical repetition of the loops help you to synchronize your body to the music. Also almost 90% of dementia patients with a musicians background will have never forgotten the music they learned, or can quickly be reminded of it. When reminded of the piece of music they used to play, they can usually recover other memories from the time when it was important to them.

The bad part about this is the film didn't cover as much about this topic as I would have like it to.

Can someone learning to play an instrument at an old age stimulate the mind back towards a "normal" state after being diagnosed with dementia? Also, what are the positives and negatives of music listening, playing, and composing during Drug, Physical, or Mental rehab? or is this all a bunch of voodoo magic?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.
