What is the ideal amount of time before a trip to purchase airfare and hotel to minimize the price on each?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I would recommend trying http://farecast.live.com

I recently read about Farecast in Super Crunchers which was about number crunching. They predict reasonably accurately whether fares will rise or fall and should be able to offer some help in your search. They also have a section on hotels.

I have been shopping for them too and this is the best article that I have come across so far

By the way - istead of telling you when to buy ( there are a lot of factors determining it ), it tell you what to look out for and what myths to avoid. Hopefully you will find this useful.

It used to be that the earlier you booked a flight, the better deal you would get. My old rule of thumb was at least 1 month, two if I could manage. However, I was watching the news the other night and they had a story on current airlines. With the economy slump, crazy extra charges, and general lack of financial security, fewer and fewer people are traveling. As a result, many seats on flights are going unsold. As a result, many airlines are scrambling to get something from these empty seats and cutting deals to get them filled. If you have sway in vacation times, you could end up with a nice deal by waiting and booking late(last week)...but you would have to be flexible on times and willing to change...
