What is the ideal amount of sleep per night?

Tip for best answer: M$0.16
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The ideal amount of sleep one actually needs varies. The National Sleep Foundation states, "Just like any other characteristics you are born with, the amount of sleep you need to function best may be different for you than for someone who is of the same age and gender. While you may be at your absolute best sleeping seven hours a night, someone else may clearly need nine hours to have a happy, productive life."

I can attest to this - when I was in college, some people could last for days (days!) on two or three hours of sleep, while my minimum was really around five or six (and then I'd take a nap later that day). I only managed about three or four "all-nighters," and I was completely non-functional for whatever amount of hours I managed to stay awake the next day (usually not many).

The National Sleep Foundation goes on to say that there are two factors to sleep - what you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle ("basal sleep") and what you need to recover from illness, lack of sleep, etc. ("sleep debt"). It gets even more complicated when we include circadian rhythms (our natural ups and downs during the day, i.e. the reason some people need coffee at two in the afternoon, and why some people crank out a day's work at eight in the morning).

They've given a general chart, though individual needs (according to what I've mentioned above) will vary.

Please always have a source to backup your statements. Which doctor or studies have shown that eight hours are recommended? If you just happened to read about it, where did you read about it? A good thing to keep in mind on Mahalo, it'll help you get more best answers. :)

It varies form age because children and new born babies and age old people sleep for more time and for young people seven to eight hours is beneficial.

From My point of view, 6 to 7 hours are enough for healthy life. But it depends on the quality of sleep too and physical conditions for the place where we sleep matters a lot. And 6 to 7 hours sleep work best at the durations between 11 pm to 6 am. If we sleep late at night like at 2 or 3 pm then this plan not works so well,as I experienced late night sleep don't properly provide rest . So for getting healthier life and freshness everyone must sleep minimum 6 to 7 hours and in between mention time period. This is my thinking, so that's why I not quoted any reference. Thanks

Everyone should take at least 8-9 hours of sound sleep to be healthy.
