What is the history of Subaru?

I have friends who are proud owners of Subaru cars. A neighbor of ours has a very impressive one, the Subaru Impreza. This brand of car is fairly new to me and I am not very familiar with it. I am curious if this is a Japanese car like the Toyota and Honda? How did this company started and who is the founder? What are the popular Subaru cars in the market today?

Subaru is the brand name owned by Fuji Heavy Industries, a Japanese company. The first Subaru car was on the market by 1954. The Japanese word Subaru means "unite". Six companies joined together to form the Fuji Heavy industries and they took the six star symbol as the logo for Subaru. These six starts are called Pleiades by the Greek and it is a part of the Taurus constellation.Subaru was the first front wheel drive car in Japan.Subaru has 4 division: Automobile, aerospace, industrial products and transportation equipment. Subaru introduced Boxer Diesel engine which runs cleaner with less vibration, in 2008. Subaru of America head office is Cerry Hill, NJ. Thomas J Doll is the COO and CFO of Subaru of America.

They are often used by hippies because the four wheel drive can get them home, and the back is big enough for two to fool around in. On top of that great mpg and reliability.
