When the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) first began shortly after the Civil War, it didn't have the intentions it does today. It started as a social club for Confederate Army soldiers. This link will fill you in with a good summary of their history.

I am currently living in Alabama which was almost the epicenter of group in its heyday. I was shocked to find out that the last known lynching happened in 1981, in the town I recently moved to.
