What is the environmentally correct method for disposing of used/dead batteries, AA, AAA etc.

I had not given it much thought since I use so few, but the girlfriend insists that there is a proper method/place to dispose of them, now we seem to be going through more and more of them. Landfills are a bad thing anyways, what or where can they go?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

This website has a list on what battery can be disposed in normal trash (some states has restrictions). For example, button battery contains mercury. Hence, it needs to be disposed at Household Hazardous Waste Collection Site.

Save them in a bucket or some kind of container and take them to Sears Auto. I used to work there and people did it all the time. Maybe even Auto Zone will take them. But keep in mind, you probably won't get your bucket back.

Thanx pomf, but what do those places do with them, do they actually get recycled or something or are they then the ones throwing them out.

The best way to protect the environment is to use eco friendly batteries or even stop using too much batteries. I found a site about button cell battery, and you can go and learn more. Maybe you can get some details about batteries http://www.battery-products.com/ .
