In my experieince it has alwasy been cucumbers. we plant them on the fences surrounding the garden and they grow like crazy! Not only that, they rabbits and deer don't seem particularly fond of them. Problem is, there are only so many things you can do with cucumbers, once you've made all the pickles you want and ate all the salad you need. I've heard of cucumber soup but never tried it.
