In all reality....easiest thing to hack is a piece of really old dry wood.

M$It's basically a firmware update that you can use to unlock your canon point n shoot camera.
Ill just tell the story in pictures:
Oh another hack or trick I found out about after I lost my camera in the snow is that the particular model camera I use sometimes has lens errors which is totally a mechanical issue and super easy to fix. so instead of buying the same camera brand new I found one on ebay for less than $40 buck including shipping being sold as broke. You can basically take the camera which is the size of a credit card and pack it like it was a pack of cigarettes and this will pop the lens gears back into place, I literally had the "broke" camera working in seconds and taking photos... every once in a while it will get the lens error but I have found you can just look at the angle of the lens and when it pops out simply give it a firm nudge and problem fixed. Since I've been using this camera it does this less often and I'm not really gentle with it because of the price etc.
First camera I used chdk with (the one I lost in snow, found it in the spring but it was DOA).

You just put the software on your sdcard and put your camera in play mode update the firmware and your ready to go! cool thing is it's totally reversible.

Being able to control more aspects of the camera opens up all kinds of possibilities:

I tried for a long time to get a photo of lightning and it just never happened, after chdk installed you can run a script called motion detect and just tripod your camera at the sky where you think lightning is going to be and it will grab the photo like magic.
I was able to get a better pic than this "baby lightning" but that's on a different pc and not uploaded online. I was so amazed because it was a huge forked lightning bolt from clouds to ground and the angle I was at there was a power lines in the foreground and withe the lightning in the background it looked as if the lighting was blasting the telephone pole and wires..

M$To get started, build something. Doesn't matter what. Building a one transistor amplifier and characterizing the performance is a great place to start. Or characterize the transistor.
But "easy" doesn't count. It's all about what's "hard" for you. Do it long enough and what's "hard" for you is "impossible" to other people.

M$There is a switch closure matrix, quadrature encoding position sensors, optical 2D motion sensors, micro switches and all with USB HID interfaces that normally use built in drivers on all major platforms (PC, Mac & Linux computers). And these are COTS devices so can be found cheap. It is the easiest solder, plug and play hack I can think of. Especially if you want to interface with regular full blown computers.
