What is the Dow Jones?

Can watching the stock numbers help increase my portfolio? Where can I learn to read investments? Are there books on the subject? Who are the known experts on the subject?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The Dow Jones, is a stock market Index that reports how the stock market if performing. It was created by Wall Street Journal editor Charles Dow and Edward Jones a statistician. The Dow shows how a group of thirty publicly owned US companies have traded on any given day.

The Dow Jones is more correctly known as The Dow Jones Industrial Average. Although many of the companies listed are not industrial in the old fashioned sense of the word.

The Dow is one of the most closely watched indices describing the health or otherwise of the US economy it can be affected by world events such as oil discoveries fuel prices or terrorist events

Dow Jones is a company that provides a variety of products for both consumers and enterprises. However, what's your probably referring to is the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which is usually referred to as the Dow Jones or just "the Dow." The Dow is a well known stock market index that measures the performance of 30 major publicly traded companies. Depending on where your investment focus is, you may also be interested in tracking other indexes such as the NASDAQ, the S&P500 and others.

If you have a self directed stock portfolio, yes, watching the numbers can help increase your earnings. There are countless experts on the subject, not all of whom should be trusted. I'd recommend that you start off by reading investment news on websites like CNBC, Bloomberg, Yahoo Finance and others.
