Like you mentioned Microsoft’s Xbox Live service gives you 2 different accounts to choose from: A Gold account and a Silver account.
Silver Xbox Live accounts are given to everyone. It’s a free account that’s activated automatically as soon as you sign into Xbox Live without a Gold account. With this, you will have access to a friend’s list, the Xbox Live Marketplace, your Avatar and gamer profile. There are also special events such as Gold Weekends that allow you to play specific games online for free.
A Gold Xbox Live account on the other hand is a subscription-based account whose primary purpose is online gaming. You can join and or create your own parties and play multiplayer games in a wide variety of Xbox 360 games that support online gaming.
