What is the difference between WoW, Second Life, and Simcity? Arent they all life simulation / virtual world games?

Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Well the purpose of each "virtual world" is quite different. WoW and Second Life are 100% online games, that can only be played online, on the servers that the company producing the software hosts. Simcity is a single player experience you, the player play by yourself. The purpose of WoW is to be first and foremost, a fun game that people play, you kill monsters, go on quests, team up with your friends to take on a giant dragon and whatnot. WoW is massively popular, with over 11 million paying by the month subscribers.

Second Life is an online social space, that people go to, to hang out. Second Life lets you do quite a lot with creating objects, environments, animations, all on your own, the game's user created content is quite prominent in a lot of areas. Also you can pay real money for Linden dollars (the in game currency) and give other people money for the content they generated.

Simcity is a game that you're supposed to derive enjoyment out of, from managing a city. It has little to do with the other two games on the list here. You build and run a city, by yourself, and that's about it.

All 3 of these games require downloads/installation processes to be able to run on your comp. There are plenty of browser based MMORPG's and online spaces/flash games that attempt to do the same things but for free.

Fusionfall's a good example of a browser based MMO (Run by cartoon network).

Habbo Hotel is a free browser based online virtual space to hang out in.

Newgrounds and Kongregate has many MANY different flash games that you can play for the same reasons as SimCity

Which of these need to be downloaded and installed and which of these can be played online without downloading anything?

All 3 require software to be installed. WoW has a trial for free, but there is a huge download first.

Second life has a smaller download and is free.

Simcity (the latest version) is a boxed game and needs to be bought and installed to play.
